Dave Gordon - Heads & Clouds
"The most deadly picture is a picture of nothing at all. The colours are there and the contrasts are there but there is no image, nothing." William S. Burroughs
My exhibition "HEADS AND CLOUDS" is a selection of recent paintings that explore favourite subjects. The heads are of politicians and dictators. Like the ever-changing political landscape, clouds are always on the move. There is an organization called the Cloud Appreciation Society with some 30,000 members that documents cloud images with titles like "The Hunchback of Notre Dame declares his love for Esmeralda" and "Salvador Dali" and has published at least one collection – "Hot Pink Flying Saucers and other Clouds" (Penguin 2007). The "Dog Barking" cloud (cumulus congestus) was spotted over Soldiers Point, Australia and was the inspiration for my dog cloud painting. The Moby Dick Cloud grew from a vaguely whale-like cloud that I spotted and photographed. Others are pure invention, but of course always possible in a shifting skyscape.
